thursday, january 24th, 2013. we are taking a live look over washington, d.c. you can kind of see from this shot some snow out there this morning you will have to contend with. i'm sarah simmons. >> i'm wisdom martin. the federal government is open today but workers have the option of taking unscheduled leave or telework. >> in maryland, anne arundel county schools delayed two hours. calvert county schools closed. charles county schools closed. fed rick county schools are delayed two hours. montgomery county schools also delayed two hours. prince george's county schools, delayed two hours. st.mary's county schools closed. >> and in virginia, alexandria city schools are delayed two hours. arlington county schools delayed two hours. culpeper schools, closed. fairfax county schools are delayed two hours. fauquier county schools closed. king george county schools also closed. loudoun county schools are

seeing less and less in the way of snow here on the radar. i think it will be out of here in the next hour or two and then it will be reduced to just a couple of flurries. reagan national, 20 degrees. very cold across the region. snow totals, anywhere between a half inch to about an inch inside the beltway. the highest amounts have been in an area from about spreadburg through king george county down into southern maryland where we are getting reports of 2 to 3 in. of his snow. we are getting reports of 2 to 3 inches to the south. want to she you winter weather advisory still in effect here until 9:00 had morning. there could be some travel issues on some of the roadways. we will see afternoon sunshine. it will become blustery and once again cold this afternoon with breezes out of the north and west gusting to about 30

and high temperatures only in the upper 20s. so we're going to have to wait a few more days for the warmer temperatures to melt this off. interesting forecast. we could do it again tomorrow with more snow. i'll have details on that in a minute. >> really firing up now. thank you. time now to check in with julie wright. >> this is the latest of an incident that has occurred out here on the roadways. this happens to be the camera of westbound 50 coming across is bay bridge headed in the direction of annapolis. i do have a serious crash just out here after the bridge. only one right lane is able to get by. you can seat flashing lights here. went through the cameras and traffic is already starting to stack up leaving route 8 as you travel westbound on other this morning. bridges ramps and overpasses ten to freeze before anything else. they are less likely to be traveled ads much as the major arteries especially early in the morning. i'm encouraging you guys to watch your speeds there because until you get a chance to mix with the chemicals and help to dissolve some of the snow out

there, it is e, it is treacherous conditions. you will find snow covered routes, wet pavement, it just depends. this happens to be southbound 270 kind of following the track from the person in front of you. the roadway has been treated here. traveling through german up two and gaithersburg, it is nothing but wet pavement as you continue southbound out towards the split. allow extra time out here on the roads. you will find if you are traveling across the american legion bridge, wet pavement again shoulder to shoulder as you travel to and from tyson's and the montgomery county line. also, let's make note that the roads, the side roads that lead you over to beach drive, they are closed as you travel between the zoo tunnel and the maryland line and that is because the roadways have not been treated. the secondary roads remain closed. northbound i-95, this was a hot spot. we had three separate accidents between quantico and dale city.

hov lanes open for you this morning. they have been treated. they are in better condition now as you travel out towards 395. 66 66 wrapping it up here in manassas. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. >> melanie alnwick has been braving the winter weather us for. i see it is still coming down. how are the roads look something. >> reporter: the roads are looking actually pretty good at least here in northwest d.c. where we are assuming that people's neighborhood streets have been treated. this stuff is very dry. it is very fine. it doesn't take much to knock it down. but on the areas where they haven't been treated, it is still a little tricky. right here, western avenue, you can see perfectly clear. we've seen the trash trucks coming. we've seen the metrobuses coming. on the main roads, everything is fine. if you are going to be walking out this morning, make sure you do have on some sort of shoes

that have some good traction on them because it is mostly on these sidewalks and the side streets where you are going to see most of the stuff piled up and really don't want to have to slip and fall just trying to get to your car to get out this morning. but one other thing we want to let you know, d.c. has had its crews, its salt and sand truck out here all morning long. we've seen them doing a very good job. all, if you are curious, let's say you are in a neighborhood where you haven't seen them yet because we've seen them here throughout northwest. can you go online and go to snow.dc.gov and they have a link there where you can go and track their equipment and track their crews and find out where are they and when are they coming next. if we haven't seen them, let us know. if you haven't seen them in your neighborhood, we want to know about it. that is the latest from here. things looking good in northwest d.c. >> thank you.

checking other top stories now, a historic decision by the pentagon giving women a chance at front line duty. an official announcement is expected today from defense secretary leon panetta. >> the move overturns a 1994 ruling that banned women from being assigned to combat units but the decision is drawing some crit schism schism. >> i don't think this is going to be over because panetta gave the announcement. services have until 2016 to do this or to give appear splaipg as to why certain kinds of units might not be appropriate for such integration. >> more than 150 american military women have died in iraq and afghanistan. -- to give an explanation. >> hillary clinton swears off with lawmakers about the handling the benghazi tax. >> a little bit later, dave ross joins me. we are talking manti te'o and

so in melanie's live shot. she is out there reporting in the snow. you can see you've got very light snow falling across the area. still north and west working down towards 270. it will start to wiped town here. we should see some breaks in the cloud by late morning and then a partly to mostly sunny afternoon. let's do some snow totals. i mentioned the jackpot. it is across the southern tier here fredericksburg through southern maryland including king george county where we are hearing reports of up to 3- inches of snow. pass don't a, about an inch. closer to town, alexandria, 6/10 of an inch. here are your temperatures. 19 right now in washington. 21 in leonardtown. 22 in quantico. don't forget, it is very cold outside. if you go you out to the to do a little sweeping or shoveling, the temperature are very cold. make sure you wear lots of layers. it will be a cold day today. the winner picking up out of

the north and west after we got a bit of a break last night. they will be blowing again 25, 30 miles per hour. so with high temperatures only in the upper 20s and a pretty brisk wind, we'll be in for a very cold day across the d.c. area. there is your satellite-radar. again, some light snow developing overnight and we're watching the last of it here this morning. the weak little clipper system to the south, that responsible for the moisture and as we hook upstream here, we should see some sunshine this afternoon. i want to mention we have our next little alberta clipper along with a little bit of southern stream moisture and they will team up and move through the day tomorrow. i think tomorrow afternoon, tomorrow night, that could bring is a few more inches of snow tomorrow as temperatures for friday will not be above freezing. so a winter time pattern here for a change for the remainder of the week. this is your thursday forecast and looking at high temperatures only in the upper 20s with sunshine developing this afternoon. we could she some more snow during the day tomorrow. that is a look at your weather

forecast. let's do some traffic. julie wright has your latest on the roads. >> wet road out here this morning. bridges, ramps and overpasses, definitely concerned about that. westbound 50, only one lane squeezing by at the scene of that crash. new problem to report in maryland. northbound i-95 before 175, there is a crash there. the roadways still a little sluggish if you will because of earlier accident activity we had south of route 80. traveling south on 270 out of germantown, continuing out towards gaithersburg and rockville, simply dealing with wet pavement. that is pretty much what we're fining here northbound on i-95. leap are open. you are slowing from aquia harbor to quantico. dale city across the occoquan be and now heading up to the franconia springfield parkway.

they are hooking better as you continue northbound up to the springfield interchange. no accident to report westbound 66. wet pavement to accompany the drive headed inbound towards manassas. what we are noticing is the secondary roads. some have been treated, some have not been treated. and some areas where you would normally have two lanes, maybe three lanes, it may be narrowed to just one lane as crews continue to spread out material there on the roads. the number of sidewalks have not been treated. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. e traffic. >> thank you. coming up income, we'll go live to fox business network in new york with a look at why apple is losing its shine. >> but first, it's story that went viral last week. now, two men in new jersey are suing subway because the sub shop has been selling and advertising foot long sandwiches that are really only 11 inches. after seeing a picture of an 11- inch sub next to a ruler, they measured the subs at stores and they all came up short.

back now with what happenle has to do with today's outlook to wall street and are you getting enough sleep? what some companies are doing to change that. lauren simonetti with fox business network is live in new york with the business beat. good morning. >> hello. >> a solid perform's in the markets but futures are lower this morning. what is at the weekend hyped this? >> we have to look at the levels from yesterday because both the dow and s&p are pushing levels we haven't seen in a while. 1500 for the s&p and 14,000 for the dow. we are within reach. that is what we are bracing for. then we'll be back before the recession ever happened, december of 2007. this morning, a little bit of weakness on the nasdaq. 10% of the nasdaq is apple. shares are down by 9%. they posted record revenue,

$54.5 billion. they sold about 48 million iphones but that wasn't enough. big disappointment here and this is hitting the overall market. >> apple has to start doing better there. let's talk about the sleep study. lack of sleep is costing some companies big time apparently. >> yeah. well, you're sleep deprived if you get less than how many hours a night. >> i think it is seven. >> it is six. >> so it is safe to say you are totally sleep deprived? >> yeah, you and me both, right? >> think i get six hours in the entire week. there is a new study by the harvard medical team and it shows that 30% of workers, about 41 million workers in the u.s. are sleep deprived and bosses should consider this because that means lost productivity at $63 billion every year. we are not functioning at our

back now on fox 5 morning news, live look at the snow and actually a snow dome there in alexandria. that is the salt dome i should say. they are getting ready to head back out on the roadways. the snow just keep on coming

down too. of course, you know, we cannot be everywhere so that is where you come in. many of you are e maiming and posting pictures of the snow where you are and check this one out. snow on lauren davies' deck in leonardtown. you can see the snow building up there on the grill. >> it is beautiful. at i very light airy snow. you can almost take a broom to it. do one of those. the heavy snow has been tower south. we just a a picture in leonardtown, st. mary's county, parts of charles county in virginia. between 2 and 3 inches. for the rest of us, about an inch. the things are winding down right now. i don't think we'll see a lot more. all right. it has been beautiful. let's do radar. we'll start with that. we'll show you it is still falling here for parts of the area. area.

all of this has pushed south on the southern side of the beltway pushing down towards dale city and pushing down towards la plata. most of the banding that has given us the snow accumulations have pushed off to the south and east. i think we'll see generally cloudy skies here during the morning hours. we should see some sunshine during the afternoon. it will not warm up a lot. high temperatures will only be in the upper 20s. so if you want mother nature to do your cleaning for you, you might have to wait a couple of days. 19 now at reagan national. temperature at both dulles and bwi marshall in the teens. check it out. dulles, 18. bwi marshall, very cold, 16 degrees again this morning. the salt on the roadways doesn't work when temperatures are this cold. they have to throw some chemical in there to get it to melt. many of the roadways, the secondary roads are still just covered in snow. winter weather advisory continues until 9:00 this morning. they will probably let this go

as the snow is winding down. heads up, we're going to get some snow. i guess everybody knows that at this point. satellite-radar, there is another look at your snow that is winding down. temperatures today only in the upper 20s with winds out of the north and west gusting to 30. blustery and cold with partial sunshine for the remainder of your thursday. >> big puffy here to stay for a few days. get that coat out. let's check in with julie wright now. wright now. >> all right, you guys. accident out here are starting to pepper our commute. and this is what we're finding westbound on 50 as you make your way over towards the bay bridge. only one right leap is able to get by at this time. delays are starting to form back at piney creek, exit 40 headed westbound on 50 headed over to the bay bridge and out towards this accident scene. bridges, ramps and overpasses are what we're concerned with. they tend to freeze before anything else. it take a while for you guys to get out there and mick with the chemicals and help break up the snow.

we do have problems to report northbound on i-95. three separate incidents between quantico appear dale city have cleared. tie-ups include the trip new stafford leaving aquia harbor headed up through 234. now leaving newington headed up towards 395. hov leap are in better shape as you continue northbound. no problems to report on the beltway between annandale and merrifield. eastbound 66 in the clear with just wet pavement coming in out of manassas. southbound 270 still a struggle out of frederick. better shape leaving 109. a change in our traffic patterns today because a lot of the schools are on a two-hour delay except in southern maryland where the schools are closed. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. e traffic. >> thank you very much. mother nature sure is giving us a dose of winter today. >> yes, she is. snow has been falling all morning lock. and if a check on how the

conditions are outside, let's head over to melanie alnwick. still coming down. >> it is coming down slowly now but, yeah, it is still coming down. it has been going on since overnight. it is definitely starting to accumulate on the grassy areas and the sidewalks. it really looks kind of pretty as you look over in the park. i'm not sure we'll able to see it. we'll try to get it better for you later. we've seen a couple of dogs enjoying the morning out here, the peaceful morning out at the dog park here right off the livingston street and western avenue here in northwest d.c. streets looking really, really good at this point. if you have had a salt truck come down your street, you shouldn't have too much of a problem. in some cases, there might only be a single track until you get a little bit more traffic out here on the roads to spread that melting mixture around.

we've seen the buses doing their regular routes. we've seen the trash trucks doing their regular routes. snow.dc.gov is where you want to go to track where the salt truck are. if you haven't seen them in your neighborhood, that is a good site to go to see when they are going to be getting to you. everybody was repaired for it. d.c., maryland and virginia did a lot of pretreating on the bridges and overpasses so they wouldn't have to do too much work out here this morning. i think, again the sidewalks and the grassy areas really are where people are going to have the most -- i shouldn't say difficulty but just be a little bit careful out there this morning. if nothing else think it will stay so cold out here that maybe if we do get that additional snow that tucker has been talking about later, maybe we'll have some good sledding by the weekend. i don't know. what do you think?

>> i hope so. i love a good sledding hill. we have a competition we're trying to get going on in here. thank you. in this morning, the fairfax county school board is set to vote on plans to build more schools in the county. the presume would cost $870 million over the income five years it includes plans for three new elementary schools and a new high school in the southwestern part of fairfax county. also, school officials are consideration plan to move about 300 students from fairfax high to neighboring schools because of overcrowding. worried parents and students packed friendly high school in maryland last 199opening to get answers in the shooting death of 16-year- old marcus jones. he was shot and killed early sunday morning after he left the house party. police officers and community leaders were there to encourage anyone with information to come forward. >> the whole anti-snitching culture is killing us and i think that all of us feel the same frustration that this person hasn't been brought to

. vice president joe biden is make a road trip to push for new grab control laws and he will head to richmond tomorrow along with senator tim kaine. president obama is planning to hit the road to draw support for the issue. to push for new gun control laws. a controversial piece of artwork. a banned portrait of the queen of england is now on display after 60 years. it was ordered hidden from the public by the liverpool town hall council because it didn't look enough like her majesty. see if you can figure out why. well, it is because it showser with a long next which you can tell she doesn't look like that. but to mark the anniversary of the queen's core nation, it is

hours. there is your radar. still getting a little bit of light snow shower activity. still getting some light snow inside the city as well and all associated with our area of low pressure. ourling clipper system that came through without a lot of moisture but falling into these unbelievably cold temperatures around here and this is the result. so again, very light, airy snow. almost tax a broom to it. and sweep it a with. all right. i was going to show you snow totals but i just pushed past that map. i'll show you temperatures instead. fredericksburg, king george county, pushing into southern maryland, calvert county, you've had the snow jackpot. we're getting pictures from some of our viewers of 2 to 3 inches. for the rest of us, anywhere between about a half inch to an inch of snow. not a lot of snow but again, we are talking about temperatures of 19 degrees. every flake has had a chaps to stick out there. 16 in baltimore. 18 out at dulles. 14 in hagerstown.

behind our system, our wind will pick up again later today and will be out of north and west gusting to about 30. we should get breaks in the clouds with partial sunshine hand a partly sunny day today. still going to be very cold today. mother nature will not do much melting for you with highed only expected in the upper 20s. so our third day in a row with temperatures failing to get out of the upper 20s. satellite-radar, we should see some sunshine this afternoon. are we looking good for later today. this is our next system, another clipper will approach and that will tap into southern moisture tomorrow and bring us yet another round of snow tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow night. that one looks like it will have a little more moisture to work with. we might be talking about a couple of inches area-wide tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow night just in time for the evening commute tomorrow. tomorrow morning's commute will be fine. it will be tomorrow evening for the next round of snow. still cold and breezy out there

>> i like to watch. >> you like it. there have been times where i have scheduled a day off because i knew i'm going to be up late and i can't come in. but it would be better for us if it was played like in the afternoon. >> i went to bed at 11:00 sunday night and had to get up at 3:00 to come to work. that doesn't work. >> not just for us but for a lot of people. >> the nfl has been around fay long time, the early 20th century. when the nfl started -- ill asay this. not the nfl. but when professional football leagues started, a lot of those games are on saturday. i'm talking about the early and mid 20th century. that is when college football was played and for the longest time, college basketball was much more popular than professional football. professional football couldn't compete. there were some leagues that folded because of that. the league that eventually became the nfl decided we are not going to compete with college football.

we don't want to play during the week because people have to work. we'll go to sundays. >> they sort of experimented with sundays. >> : right. there was some resistance to that on the part of some communities, some community leaders, religious leaders. they said this is the sabbath. this is a holy day. we don't want sports on sundays although other sports were played on sundays too. but they went to sundays. and starting in the late '50s into the early '60s they started to grow and grow in popularity as people tended to go to the games and gravitate towards the games so sunday worked. do you want to jump in here? >> no. >> so, when they came to setting up what was originally called the afl-nfl championship game, it was on zippeds. it used to be on sunday afternoons. but all things were controlled by television and the ratings
